July 2009
Congratulations to the club after another impressive trophy haul at the 2009 RDNL AGM. Well done in particular to...
- Thunderbirds 3 for winning midweek division 3 and gaining promotion to division 2
- Jo Healing for winning the midweek division 1 player's player award
- Sandra Fulford for winning the Sayer-Toms most improved umpire award
- Lisa Apsey for winning the midweek division 3 player's player awards AND overall player's player award
- Thunderbirds 4 for winning the midweek division 3 Sportsmanship award
Well,
I must have tempted fate in my June 'News' update by referring to only
a 'major upset' denying Thunderbirds 1 the midweek division 1 title.
The major upset happened, and despite remaining unbeaten all season,
Thunderbirds 1 were docked 6 points for breaking a borrowing rule,
resulting in the team finishing runners-up in the league. The
Reading Chair described the penalty as 'severe' at the RDNL AGM and
warned other clubs against making the same mistake. But after an
uplifting speech/poem from 2008/09 season team captain Laura at the
club AGM, TB1 are looking forward to the start of a new season in
September!
A week after the RDNL AGM we celebrated the netball year with our own club AGM at Zizzi's in Reading. (Click here to see the photos of the award winners and click here for a list of the award winners). Thanks to Sharon for organising a lovely evening for us all.
The
versatility summer league is now well underway. It's great to see
former club members Chloe and Becky back from university and not just
playing for but running the Thunderbirds 3 summer league team.
Goodbye
and Good Luck to Fizz and Yasmin as they move on to university in
September - we hope you get the A level results you need, and don't
forget to keep playing netball as you're both fab players!
June 2009
Although
the summer season should be over by now, postponed fixtures due to bad
weather earlier in the season mean that it will be another 4 weeks
before teams' positions in the league tables are finalised.
However, short of a major upset Thunderbirds 1 look set to win
RDNL division 1 for a third consecutive year, with Thunderbirds 2 not
that far behind after a very impressive first season in the
top division.
With four matches left to play Thunderbirds 3 are
in strong contention for promotion to division 2 next season, and the
junior team look set to finish a respectable mid table in division 4 at
the end of their first season.

Thunderbirds
2 win 'pool 2' of Bournemouth Netball Tournament. Thunderbirds
entered 2 teams into this tournament, playing in different groups on
the Saturday but both qualifying for pool 2 on the Sunday. Sadly
both Thunderbirds teams were in the same group, whcih resulted
in Thunderbirds 2 knocking out Thunderbirds 1. However
Thunderbirds 2 then went on to win their semi-final and final.
In the final they staged the mother off all come-backs, having
gone down something like 6-0 to eventually win by a single goal!
